[Mike Shinoda "Glorious Excess" Art Book] Posted on 31 Aug 2009 by Siby
Now available in the Merchandise Online Store

'GLORIOUS EXCESS'
by Mike Shinoda
Foreword by Shepard Fairey

Who would know more about the perils of celebrity than one who’s carrying its load? Linkin Park musician and visual artist Mike Shinoda turned his experience of success in the music industry into a grand visual comment. With the completion of the dual series that encompassed the idea, Glorious Excess (Born) and (Dies), Shinoda used paint, canvas and dirty, lo-res imagery to help his audience comprehend the influences of popular culture from his unique standpoint.

Glorious Excess is a 128-page full-color book that documents the bodies of work Shinoda created for (Born) and (Dies), two conjunct shows held at the Japanese American National Museum. Shinoda’s work follows a skeletal central figure’s rise to fame in the nine works created for Born, and the character’s fall in the 17 works produced for Dies. In the forward, world-renowned artist Shepard Fairey puts this work into cultural context. “Mike Shinoda makes art that is telling the culture what is happening to it,” Fairey writes, “but unlike the dry presentation of an academic social commentator, Mike’s visual commentary has a visceral appeal that might just break through to the ADD generation.”

The book also includes five insightful chapters written by Shinoda. In these chapters, he explains how the idea for Glorious Excess was born, critiques celebrity culture, discusses his hip-hop influences, questions media’s intentions, and examines what his work means after the King of Pop’s death. Shelley Leopold, managing editor of the LA Weekly, also wrote an essay for the book. With keen insight, Leopold thoroughly examines Shinoda’s work and sheds new light on it.
[THEARTCOLLECTORS REVIEW] Posted on 31 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

Glorious Excess (Dies) got a glowing review by world-class art collector and critic, Ronnie Pirovino today. Here's what he had to say:

"LA’s Japanese American National Museum is now hosting a prodigious art exhibition by Mike Shinoda entitled Glorious Excess (Dies). The massive creative effort is a pivotal point in the career of the young artist, as he establishes himself outside of his work in music. Shinoda’s adroit use of all types of media to channel his voice is remarkable. The show signals the artist’s ability to create his vision in a plethora of mediums, including digital platforms. It’s clear that the concept of the exhibition has been thoughtfully embedded into each rendition. It’s not too early to opine that Glorious Excess (Dies) provides one the year’s most memorable moments. On view until October 4."

There are a ton of great images from the show on theartcollectors.com. A special thanks goes out to Ronnie for coming to the show.

***edit:
thefishbelly.blogspot.com:

(...)
Mike Shinoda was interviewed by Roger Gastman. It was a real intimate setting, yet MS tried his best lay down the basics in terms of his background and where he comes and how he got to where he is in his art.

After some interviewing, there was an extensive Q&A session with the audience, and a viewing of the short film that accompanied the exhibit.

Glorious Excess (DIES) explores the public's obsession with the celebrity lifestyle from the viewpoint of a unnamed skeleton man who appears throughout the exhibit in different forms...

Tabloids, celebrities, excess, music quotes and musicians depicted. The importance of such things to this artist is significant because it comes from his view as a celebrated musician who also holds the ability to express his opinions through other media. What a rare talent!

MS walked the audience through the exhibit, which I thought was very nice. That girl clutching the skate deck looks ecstatic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment. It's not everyday the artist dedicates himself to help the public understand his work. It is when people like Mike Shinoda produces something that expresses an idea and shares it to inspire more creative thinking is when one is called a true artist(imho). That second part is really important, I've met many artists who just leave their work as is, in a 'take it or leave it' sort of way. Sometimes that could be cool, but it's even cooler when an artist tries to make his art open for interpretation in an inclusive way.

[SHINODA+METRIC REMIX: GOLD GUNS GIRLS] Posted on 30 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

Thanks to everyone who came out for last night's Glorious Excess (Dies) opening; images of everything are on the way today.

In the preview video for GLXS, some of you noticed a song by Metric in there. I mentioned the band Metric a long time ago...here...and some of you know I like their music. Their album "Fantasies" contains a song called "Gold Guns Girls." When I first heard it, I thought: this is like a theme song for Glorious Excess!

Well, I contacted the band, and (to make a long story short) I remixed the song. With their blessing, it's now on the "music" page here on mikeshinoda.com http://www.mikeshinoda.com/music

If you like this song, check the band out at http://www.ilovemetric.com/. The band will be making the song available to fans soon...but you're getting the exclusive here first!

From dailydujour.com:

Mike Shinoda opened his Glorious Excess (Dies) solo at the Japanese American National Museum on Friday to a staggering line waiting for the public reception opening at 8 PM. Dailydujour was fortunate to make the VIP opening which featured several notable guests including Rob Dyrdek, Joe Hahn, Lisa Ling, James Jean, Roger Gastman, Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins, and more.

The show has been shrouded mostly in secrecy preview pics have been few and far between. This approach enhanced the impact of the opening. There were quite a few impressive surprises in store for the crowd including a custom Honda motorcycle emblazoned with Shinoda’s GLXS art positioned just in front of the gallery entrance.

Featuring 17 new paintings, the new show follows up on last year’s Glorious Excess (born) show by detailing the sudden end of the fictional character who enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame. The overarching effect is both an exploratory and cautionary tale of the cult of celebrity and the pitfalls of excess.

Careful observers will note a general narrative progression from the front of the gallery to the back. The bright colorful pieces detail the imminent end while the softer, warm tone hued pieces chronicle the ‘after’. It is in the latter that Shinoda broadens his scope explicitly with his ‘Seasons’ series featuring portraits of four celebrity martyrs John Lennon, Andy Warhol, Kurt Cobain, and James Dean. The mortal end of the GLXS character is punctuated by an ornate funeral scene complete with a silver plated skeleton in an open casket – first class excess, even in death.

In addition to the funeral scene, Mike worked until the 11th hour (roughly 5 pm on Friday) to put the finishing touches on the other installation elements including the impressive large wall mural and the large collage of celebrity tabloid magazines.

Finally, the opening featured a screening of a short 12-minute documentary that focused on the theme of the show celebrity and those obsessed with it. From footage of paparazzis to bus tours of stars’ homes, it’s a good watch and also features behind the scenes footage of Mike working on the show, some of which was seen in the preview video on his site.

The museum store offered quite a selection of show merch including the four skate decks and the Glorious Excess book. If you’re not in LA, remaining inventory will be available at MikeShinoda.com this Monday.

From notcot.com:

Just checked out the preview of Mike Shinoda’s Glorious Excess (Dies) show at the Japanese American National Museum, the follow up to his Glorious Excess (Born) show last year. It’s stunning ~ a definite must see ~ and what’s nice is that besides the fact that the work is technically beautiful and a fun mix of skulls, urban art, “vanitas”, mixed media wallpapering with gossip rags, a casket and silver skeleton, video and more… the way it all comes together as a thought provoking look at the life (and death) of celebrity through paparazzi and the consumption engine behind it all is fascinating ~ especially coming from Shinoda who is most known for Linkin Park and Fort Minor, and he is also an Art Center trained graphic artist and illustrator. Take a look at the images on the next page to get a feel for the flow from excessive living to implosion to death to ascension… and if you make it to the actual show, the video that ties the whole show together is definitely worth sitting in on! (Love that he actually filmed what it was like being on the “star home” bus tours - and captured the world of the paparazzi from the red carpet perspective).

Number 9:
Mike Shinoda: Glorious Excess

When he’s not voicing the frustrations of alienated teens everywhere as one of the driving forces of emo-metal rockers Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda is also quite the accomplished painter. His latest show of paintings and digital work explores “celebrity culture, consumer addiction and fascination with excess.” The show opens Saturday with Shinoda in attendance to meet fans and sign autographs. Japanese American National Museum, 369 E. 1st St., L.A. 8-10 p.m. Sat. Free.

[Interview with Mike] Posted on 29 Aug 2009 by Siby
subvertmagazine.com has an interview with Mike.

So, Mike, you’re clearly a dedicated guy who has invested a lot of time into various artistic skills. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned whilst developing your talent?

One big breakthrough happened in college. I went to Art Center in Pasadena, which is a really fast-paced and competitive school. There was very little social life on campus, because the workload was just so heavy.

We took what we did very seriously…so spending 40 hours on a painting, then putting it up in front of your class to have 30 people critique it was brutal.

As freshmen, most people got really defensive about their work. Then, at some point, I realized that the criticisms that made me the most defensive were usually the ones that were right. It really helped me to enjoy the process of making my work better, by leaving ego at the door during the creative process.

Having your work critiqued by people is tough, was there ever a time when you struggled to overcome that fear of publishing your work or performing in-front of an audience?

When we released Hybrid Theory. Our first album was painful to make, because it seemed like everyone was trying to tell us to change. They wanted us to be more like this band or that band, and we fought it tooth and nail the entire way.

So, that is to say: we made the album we wanted to make.

But once it came out, it took off surprisingly fast, and we got a lot of criticism for it entering the mainstream so quickly!

We had to overcome a lot of our own fears about what it meant to “sell out,” and realized that we never “sold out” at all we did what we wanted to do, and people reacted to it in a positive way.

As long as we didn’t compromise our integrity, we could stand behind the record, which is what we did.

You’re renowned for having very loyal and committed fans, developing that rapport is a skill-set in itself, how did you learn that?

On our first tour, we opened for a band that treated us like crap. Our album wasn’t out incidentally, neither was theirs but they had a single that was starting to do well on the radio. We would get to the venue, and those guys would take up every room in the place, leaving us to sit on the curb outside waiting to play.

Instead of signing autographs, they would charge their fans for a signed picture. They had hairdressers and bodyguards, and we were playing 500-seat clubs! It was ridiculous. But instead of moping outside, we talked to the fans. We signed everything and gave our demo cassettes away for free.

We learned a great lesson: treat your opening bands and fans with respect. Today, we still set up a meet-and-greet with our fan club at every event, and we make an effort to treat our opening bands with respect.

Tell me about about your understanding of money and how it works in the creative industries.

My art show, “Glorious Excess Dies” is about this idea. It’s about obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess; how our opinions are shaped by viral news and our idols, and what it all looks like to me.

There’s a saying in the music industry: “as soon as you can afford everything, they give it to you for free.” Maybe the bottom line is that I don’t know how money and fame work yet, but I know that sometimes it seems like the whole world is obsessed with them to an unhealthy degree.

You must spend a fair amount of time online like us, as a blogger yourself, how important do you think the Internet is to the creative industries now and going forward?

How important? It couldn’t be more important. As a creative person, your top priority is making good art. After that, your top priority is to have a strong online presence!

[EXTRA! EXTRA! ] Posted on 28 Aug 2009 by Siby
From thehundreds.com:

This Saturday night, Mike Shinoda unveils the final act of a 2-part art series entitled “Glorious Excess.” Glorious Excess : DIES will be showing at the JANM in downtown Los Angeles through October 4th, showcasing 17 new works “…about obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess. The show follows a nameless celebrity character as he indulges in the sex, drugs, and rock n roll lifestyle. In this show, he grows to the limits of his fame, reveling without moderation in the excesses of modern celebrity until he implodes.”

I caught up with Mike this afternoon at the gallery as he was busy preparing the installation. I’ll tell you now that it’s heavy on art and just as heavy in concept, so prepare your brain and your senses for stimulus overload.

And just for you, Mike granted some exclusive The Hundreds coverage of just a couple pieces that tell part of the story:

Well, I'm happy to say that you can. All merchandise (that doesn't sell out on opening night) will be available here on mikeshinoda.com starting Monday, in the web store. So come back on Monday, click on "store" to get the new stuff, and support two great charities.

...and here's some more new info: the skate decks representing four of the pieces in the show will be available. "The Good Life," "Oyakodon," "Fireworks," and "Neuphoria" are the names of the pieces.

The skateboards don't show each painting in its entirety...you'll see those once the show is up!

PS - For all you Metric fans: stay tuned, an announcement about that remix--and its relationship to Glorious Excess (Dies)--is coming soon.
[Linkin Park Epicenter ] Posted on 27 Aug 2009 by Siby
From giantrobot.com:

Going to see Linkin Park isn't a regular occasion is you're hanging out with Mr Joe Hahn. He rents tour buses to take people to such concerts. The front part looks like below and imagine, a day before we got on this bus, Ice Cube took a dump in it because he was on vacation with his family in this exact ride. Equipt with food, fridge, shitter, cable, wifi, and a driver, the ride to Pomona's Epicenter Concert was luxurious.

Joe getting ready for the show. Band dudes get into the mode of playing gigs, and if you're a friend, you have to let them do that. It's their job. This is the van that takes the band from the parking lot to the concert. Everyone else has to walk. Inside the van, body guards, family and friends.

Tons of folks made it to see the bands. I even ran into Lisa Ling, her husband Paul, and Laura Ling and her husband as well. They looked happy to be out. What did I say to Laura? "welcome back."

[Back Talk with Mike Shinoda] Posted on 26 Aug 2009 by Siby
From juxtapoz.com:

How do you feel right now?

A little under the weather, just finishing up a world tour with my band, and setting up for my Glorious Excess Dies art show in Los Angeles…so, tired, but excited.

If you could wake up in a different place tomorrow morning, where would it be and what would you do?

Home, and I’d get a burrito. I’ve been on tour in Europe and Asia for almost five weeks, and they basically don’t have Mexican food here.

If you lost your creative skill, how would you see yourself making a living?

I hope I never have to think about that. My wife knows: if I go for a couple days without doing something creative, I start having crazy nightmares and insomnia.

If you could punch one living contemporary artist, who would it be?

If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all…

Was your first kiss worth writing a song about?

Whether good or bad, isn’t everyone’s? I never have, though.

At what point were you particularly happy?

Recently, I was ecstatic when I finished the book for my “Glorious Excess Dies” show. In the past, every time I talked about the show, I felt like I didn’t do it justice, or I left something out. The book finally sums up the ideas of the show, which can be a little complicated sometimes.

No regrets allowed, but there must have been one?

I probably have some, but I can’t think of one right now.

What trait do your friends have in common?

I suppose a lot of my close friends are pretty assertive. They tend to go after what they want.

If you had to evacuate your home or studio, what's the one thing you would grab?

My laptop. Sorry if that’s too practical; I keep my music and art on there, and I doubt I would be able to recreate that stuff if it was lost.

Greatest love of your life?

My wife.

What is your favorite vice?

On tour, Chester, Dave and I play Texas Hold ‘Em literally every other day. We don’t usually play for a lot of money$20 dollar buy-ins most of the time but we play a lot. In fact, I think we’re going to be putting together a charity poker tournament with Music For Relief soon.

When you blow out the birthday candles, what do you wish for?

Stuff that’s way too personal for Juxtapoz (or anyone) to print.

If you could play a character from a favorite film or TV show for a day, who would it be?

I used to love Knight Rider. How cool would it be to drive around with KITT? Actually, a couple of my bandmates and I have joked about turning my car into KITT, painting it black and adding the LED light on the front. The funniest part is that the car is a Prius.

Do you ever lie?

I try not to make it a habit.

Do you think viewers understand the intent of your work?

It’s tough; I find that I’m constantly riding the line between explaining too much, and explaining too little. If I explain too much, I feel like I’m forcing a meaning onto the art of music, which can take away from the fan’s version. What if the fan thinks it’s about one thing, and then you tell them it’s not? That sucks—I’d rather they have their own version than mine, in that case. But if I explain too little, I feel like I’m chickening out, and not standing behind the actually story or inspiration behind the art. Maybe I worry too much!

What virtue can you do without?

That’s an awesome question; so hard to answer. What are the virtues? Patience, generosity, chastity, courage, morality…I don’t know what they all are. I guess chastity would go away first!

Do you even notice when you're swearing?

Absolutely. A lot of my friends have kids now, and I don’t want to be the one responsible for them cursing at Mom and Dad.

What has been your proudest moment?

I’ve been lucky to receive a lot of honors; the awards for music come to mind first. But it’s not really right to feel “proud” of those—awards, for the most part, are decided by a group of “insiders.” The best music and art isn’t always the stuff that wins awards. So I suppose I’m more proud of something that was a direct result of my own actions, like graduating college. I worked my butt off to finish school.

What would you like to be remembered for?

Not bad things, I hope.

How would you prefer to die?

I hate getting my blood taken in a hospital, so hopefully in a way that doesn’t involve that. Every time I get my blood taken, I get nauseous to the point of throwing up. In college, we went to USC medical center and drew in a room full of cadavers, and those didn’t make me sick for some reason. But drawing a little blood out of my arm makes me totally ill.

[LPAssociation.com & LPLive.net Q&A With Chester] Posted on 26 Aug 2009 by Siby
From lpassociation.com:

LPAssociation: A recent behind the scenes clip has leaked out on the internet concerning the upcoming video for the second Dead By Sunrise single "Let Down". Can you tell us a little more about the plot behind the video and what we can expect from it?

Chester: The plot is this: the album artwork is an artistic kind of theme where myself and the guys from Dead By Sunrise are being swarmed by this black void trying to destroy us and so we’re kind of getting sucked up by this black presence. The video is a representation of that and an extension of the artwork. I will be getting engulfed by the black void, the same sheet we used for the artwork we’re using in the video. I’m wrapped up in it and it’s trying to kill me, but you can’t tell its trying to kill me. Inside the black void is an image of a woman who must be causing me this grief that’s going on in the song and the fabric turns from the shape of her body into the shape of my face. I’ve yet to see any edits yet so I’m anxiously awaiting those to see how it turned out.

LPAssociation: About a year ago you launched a clothing line called Ve'cel to the general public and so far the response in regards to the line has been very positive. What are your ambitions for Ve'cel and where would you like to see the clothing line a few years from now?

Chester: I think that making clothes is kind of a tricky game. Everybody seems to have a clothing line and that’s not why Ve’cel was created. It was created as an extension of Club Tattoo. We wanted to make a Club Tattoo clothing line that we would carry in our stores and have a premium line, but because of the onslaught of bad tattoo driven designers, we decided not to release Club Tattoo as a line and release something outside of the industry and that’s what we did with Ve’cel. I’d like it to remain different from the others in the genre. We’re a small company and we’re trying to build the reputation of the brand on its own and not have to sell clothes based on the fact that I’m involved.

LPAssociation:In your opinion how do you feel Linkin Park has improved since you guys recorded Minutes To Midnight? Specifically, have you noticed anything different since meeting up for this recording cycle?

Chester: I think we always get a little better after every record. We’re more open minded and more interested in trying to push ourselves in terms of the songs we’re making and the sounds we’re using and that’s where we grew up the most over time.

LPAssociation: What is one thing you have yet to accomplish with Linkin Park that you would hope to one day achieve as a musician?

Chester: There are some things that bother me that I kind of don’t understand but I think they’re more of a music in general thing and I don’t know how valid they are. What bothers me the most with music is I want the fans to be more open minded. Being in a band like Linkin Park where we don’t fit anywhere, we float around and live in ambiguous place, we have a chance to play a lot of different shows with a lot different bands. There are certain fans that like what they like and they hate everything else. I hate that. I’m not saying I want everyone to like what I do, but I respect anyone that has the balls to get up on stage and do what they do. I want more open mindedness or at least more tolerance. I see bands play their guts out and get disrespected and that pisses me off.

LPLive: You've been working on your solo project for quite a long time. The song "Morning After" dates back to at least 2001, for instance. How far back does Dead By Sunrise really go, and how challenging was it to keep some of the material from sounding dated?

Chester: That’s a good question. We started making the album in 2006. I think that because I’m drawing from a grungier rock sound as well as an alternative pop sound where we mix the two together, it already has that vibe of sounding familiar in a way. Adding the electronic element to the music elevates that from sounding dated. Good songs are good songs when they come out and that’s what I try to keep in mind when I’m writing. That’s what I’m always trying to do. I don’t know if I’ve accomplished it yet, so we’ll see when the album comes out.

LPLive: Several bands (Metallica, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, etc.) have been commemorating album anniversaries recently by playing them in their entirety as part of their live sets. Do you have any special plans for Hybrid Theory's 10th anniversary in 2010?

Chester: We’re no longer going to be playing any songs from Hybrid Theory. That’s our gift. Just kidding! *laughs* I don’t think we’ve put any thought into it. I don’t think we’ve realized it’s already been 10 years. We’re focusing on the next record. Wow, Hybrid Theory is 10 years old. Kind of crazy. Makes me feel old.

LPLive: It wasn't too many years ago that you described yourself as being computer illiterate and not liking the Internet. You also have every reason not to be keen on modern technology, with your experience of having a stalker and whatnot. However, you and your wife have both been pretty active on Twitter recently, and you're surprisingly open about your personal lives. What prompted the change, and how do you feel about the interaction you have with all of your fans through the Internet these days?

Chester: I have a love/hate relationship with twitter. I find it completely annoying, but often times useful and entertaining. It’s really easy to text. I’ve never actually been on a computer while using twitter. So it can’t be counted as becoming a tech-head. For someone that’s in a band that’s so computer savvy and with all these tools that we use, I just tell someone I need you to help me record this and I have someone get on the computer who knows how to use pro-tools. It’s kind of ridiculous. Ever since I was a little kid learning how to program in DOS and make a square on the screen, my brain can’t comprehend it for some reason. Its’ really difficult for me to figure out how computers work. I’m ok at it. I can check my emails, but I’m not the most computer savvy person. I take a little bit of pride in that and I also feel like an idiot.

From mikeshinoda.com:

1 - Mikeshinoda.com Featured Artists
I intend to do more of these features on unsigned bands that I think are cool after the dust settles from the GLXS show. If you are a musician or you have a band...get those mp3s ready.

2 - SlamXHype Interview
Sorry about the slamxhype interview going down. I think there was some kind of error over there, and it will probably be back up in the next few days.

3 - A response to this ongoing question:
PS: ANSTICE: ARGH. I need that interview! I'm going to try ONE MORE time before Saturday, and hopefully enough other people will want it enough to make you do it. I'm covering GLXS from beginning to end in our blog. I would like to do a SHORT interview with you (I think I have 9 questions). http://rockstarme.deviantart.com/journal/26694583/ Read this and please, please, PLEASE consider it. Because you'd be made of win if you did. Thanks =)

M: I will answer your questions here on the blog, but only if they're good, and partly because you said "made of win." Post your questions on your site right now. If the questions are lame, I will feed you to Phoenix's goofy little poodle. http://twitter.com/phoenixlp

[ KROQ | Epicenter 09] Posted on 24 Aug 2009 by Siby
From suru-la.com:
This past Saturday a group of us accompanied Joe to KROQ’s Epicenter 09 concert. Joe was kind enough to charter a tour bus for all of us, so we were able to enjoy the trip to the venue almost as much at the event itself. With typical LA traffic hindering an early arrival, we made it just in time to the Pomona Fair Grounds to see Alice in Chains perform. Soon after the guys took center stage and as always put on a great performance. The good people at Monster Energy Drink granted us access to their four story makeshift VIP Lounge/Tower and I was able to get some greats shots and video of the event. Hope you enjoy, and as always thank you Joe!

LP "New Divide"- SURU TV
--------------------------------------------------------

From thehundreds.com:

So Joe (Linkin Park) invited me to come watch his band perform Saturday out in the sleepy suburban brown town of Pomona. He arranged a tour bus for the afternoon, so this is what was awaiting in his driveway by the time I got there. The driver told me that he just took Ice Cube and his family on vacation in this beast, dropped ‘em off the night before, came and picked us up.

Maybe you’d find it strange that I’ve never been on a tour bus before, considering my rowdy rock star lifestyle. I’m like the Bret Michaels of streetwear, in case you haven’t heard. It kinda felt like a Laughlin Best Western motel inside, but with mini cupcakes, chorizo quesadillas and iced liquor stocked in all the cabinets. So there were 2 of these lounges on both ends of the bus, separated in the middle by a bunkbed room.

This bus comfortably sleeps 12. Joe and the band’s filmer Mark exchanged stories from the road over years of touring. Apparently the beds are really comfortable, each equipped with a screen and DVD player, and you can pull an easy 8 hours with the curtains drawn.

The diamond ceiling mirror was the cherry on top. We were watching Fast Times at Ridgemont High, anxiously anticipating Phoebe Cates’ pool scene. But when the moment came, Eric (Giant Robot) accidentally pressed the remote and RUINED EVERYTHING!

So we reach our destination, on the backlot of a rock music festival called Epicenter. Some concert officials boarded the bus, distributed our passes, and made us feel special. I also hooked up the Media pass so I could score some pit shots for you guys.

As we de-bus, Mike Shinoda (right) has no trouble convincing Peter (Cassette), Joe, and I to head over to the main stage to watch Alice in Chains perform.

So we piled into an unmarked white van and pulled up right behind the stage. I could hear Alice in Chains jumpstart their set as the doors opened, the gritty smoke mixing with the wafting dust in the air. At this point, I’m feeling REALLY special.

But probably not as special as Joe. I couldn’t walk with this guy or Mike anywhere near the concertgoers. Their fans were rabid, no shame, shouting, begging for autographs, super excited and maniacal to see their favorite rockstars. After 2 minutes out of the hole, we had to duck backstage, much to the dismay of underage girls and their cougar moms who were ready to throw their bodies and unmentionables at the guys.

From janm.org:

August 30 - October 4, 2009

Following his highly-successful 2008 show, Glorious Excess (Born), Mike Shinoda returns to the National Museum to unveil his latest collection of paintings and digital works. Larger, broader, and more sensational than before, Glorious Excess (Dies) is the next chapter in his series exploring society’s obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess.

Shinoda’s new works continue to evolve, blending his personal experiences in the spotlight with social commentary and fine art technique while expanding his signature visual vocabulary, juxtaposing symbols of death, money and sex against vibrant neo-pop imagery. In an age where superstardom dominates the media, Glorious Excess (Dies) immortalizes consumption, fame and wealth, challenging the viewer to question what is real.

Don't feel bad. He told me to eat it as well. But I wasn't having a blog/Twitter war. I just bet why he wouldn't last more than three weeks on Twitter. And we're desperately trying to get #GloriousExcessDies as a Trending Topic on Twitter. You should announce it so people will actually pay attention.

That's a great idea. Phoenix will love it if #GloriousExcessDies becomes a trending topic on Twitter, especially if he's involved in the conversation. If everyone could help us out with that, it would be awesome. Include #GloriousExcessDies in your posts...
[NEW DIVIDE MAKING BILLBOARD HISTORY] Posted on 20 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

From Billboard:
"'NEW' NO. 1: Same as the old one, and that lifts Linkin Park into elite territory in the history of the Alternative Songs chart.

"New Divide" leads the airplay list for a 10th week, making Linkin Park just the second act in the chart's 21-year archives to enjoy reigns of at least 10 weeks with three or more tracks. The band stayed on top for 12 weeks in 2003-04 with "Numb" and held sway for 15 frames with "What I've Done" in 2007…"

[OH NO...PHOENIX ON TWITTER] Posted on 20 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

In case you don't already know, I'm not on Twitter. I simply feel this blog is big enough to hold all of my mental barf, I don't need another outlet. With that said, Chester was the only other guy in our band on...until now.

To make a long story short, Phoenix--who has been vehemently against joining--has accepted a dare: to try to stay on for 3 months. My bet is that he won't get to one...but whether he makes it that far or not, it will undoubtedly be hilarious watching him try. Do yourself a favor and follow him. I'll be checking in with him from here on mikeshinoda.com regularly.

[HOME FROM TOUR] Posted on 19 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

Eleven days to go until Glorious Excess (Dies) opens here in L.A. I just got home from our "world lap" as Dave called it...We circled the globe in about 5 weeks, finishing with the show here in Pomona this weekend, and I've been putting the final touches on the art show via email and expensive international call :) It's been tough, but I think everything is coming together.

I don't want to tell the story of the show before you see any art, but here's an idea of what to expect: in the first show, our star character exploded onto the scene. He was violent, filthy rich, and world-famous. I hoped to start conversations with the work--not just critique our obsession with fame, money, and stardom. I hope you guys also saw a sense of humor there, in my effort to figure out what I thought about celebrity, spending time on both the inside and out.

In this new show, our "star" completely implodes. He begins the show as an overblown superstar, and works his way to a psychadelic, fame-induced nirvana. The end will be up to you to interpret.

I'll be doing coverage of the show here, so for those of you who are out of town, you'll get a taste of what it's like. For those that can make it...see you there.

PS: on an ironic note, Michael Jackson's birthday was August 29th--the same day as the opening.

[Dinner with Joe and Chester] Posted on 18 Aug 2009 by Siby
From hypebeast.com:

Daniel (Wu) texted all of us saying that Joe Hann from Linkin Park was in town and D was asking us to go to dinner together at this spot called HEE KEE (a famous Hong Kong style seafood restaurant which is also one of his favorites…that place is the bomb).

I’m not a big fan of Linkin Park but Joe owns a shop at Melrose called SURU that carries Know1edge and I’ve heard a lot of good things about Joe Hann himself, as a person, so of course, I had to meet this guy.

Meeting new dope cats is always a treat, he’s a humble and a nice guy considering his success. I also had the chance to meet up with Chester (the vocalist), which is also another humble nice cat. After that I had new found respect for them and Linkin Park.

It was definitely a good dinner with lots of stories about crazy stalkers, bodyguards, smelly fans and more.

When Daniel asked Chester how he maintains his voice while performing and his practicing methods, Chester said he didn’t have any but, he had been singing since he was 14 years old in a band.

Good luck on everything fellas, you guys deserve everything.

[Juxtapoz Interview: Mike Shinoda] Posted on 17 Aug 2009 by Siby
Juxtapoz interviewed Mike Shinoda:

Mike Shinoda will be opening his second solo exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum on August 29th, entitled "Glorious Excess (Dies)." If the success of his first solo at that Museum is any indication we are all in for quite a treat. Shinoda was gracious enough to take a few moments out of his busy schedule to talk about his upcoming show, his music career and the exciting things which lay ahead for this gifted artist.

AMF: So let's get this out of the way...you are a member of the band Linkin Park. You are also a very accomplished visual artist, among other things. I recently showed someone images of your artwork and they immediately knew your stuff. When it came out in later conversation that you were a member of Linkin Park they were like, "I had no idea". Is this what you are hoping for in your career as a visual artist? To keep your music and art careers separate? Or are you cool with it all being interconnected?

MS: That's a cool story. The band being what it is, I always try to put extra love into my art--and other, less mainstream projects--just to keep things balanced. I don't mind people associating the two, but there are obviously differences in approach when talking about making a Linkin Park album versus making a show like "Glorious Excess." There are topics I can cover in this gallery show that I don't think would make a very good song. For example, this show is about obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess.

AMF: Glorious Excess (Dies) is your second solo exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum. What was the first experience like and how do you think this second show will vary from the first? Is there anything that didn't happen the first time around that you are hoping will be different? I have seen you continue to grow as a visual artist and I am just curious what exceptions you might be placing on yourself or your work as this second solo exhibition draws near?

MS: I had a great time putting the first show together. I don't really have any regrets, I just try to work on the concepts and craft each time, to hopefully improve as an artist with each show. This upcoming show is the culmination of a lot of work.

AMF: One aspect of your work I find interesting is the unique way you combine digital and hand done imagery. What are the motivations behind this and what is it that you are trying to express by mixing these mediums?
MS: I think we all have real-life identities and virtual versions of ourselves. People act differently online, whether on a blog, in email, on Facebook or Twitter. Online, people are more bold; sometimes more honest, sometimes more nasty. In person, you have a human being's feelings to think about--online, it's somewhat removed. People can easily create wholly separate identities for themselves online. I think these things play into the art and methods I use; the interplay between tactile media and virtual media is an inseparable part of our lives.
In the context of this show, the real vs. digital aspect plays a slightly different role. Tabloid culture is a viral gossip culture. Images and stories get simplified, and the resolution of the images and ideas get compressed and condensed. People are drawn in by the smallest, most explosive version of a story; then that version of the story gets copied and pasted, from email to email, blog to blog. That's why I had to use a combination of hi-res and low-res imagery in the pieces; it just seemed to fit. I felt it was a representation of a struggle to decipher between what was "real" and what was not.

AMF: I would like to ask a similar question about your use of skulls and skeletons. I am wondering what this constant use of Skeletons means to you as it seems to be so prevalent in your work?

MS: There were so many reasons for the skeleton: the rock/punk/metal reference, anorexia, poison, and the anarchic lifestyle I'm talking about in the pieces. It's also like a modern "vanitas." Vanitas paintings were about emptiness, pleasure, and the transience of life. This show is like that, but standing on the red carpet with supermodels and an AK-47.

AMF: Let's talk a bit about collaborations. You seem to really enjoy doing collaborations and you have ended up collaborating with some pretty incredible artists. If you would, talk a bit about what this style of art means to you and maybe a few highlights from some past collaborations that stand out in your mind.
MS: In my band, collaboration is a huge part of the process, whether writing a song or playing a show. When it comes to painting, I like collaborating because it forces me outside my comfort zone. The toughest collaborations--but ones with great results--were probably with Gary Baseman, Greg Simkins, and Dalek. I did them all in the same month, and everyone's style was so different. It's a lot of fun, though. I think my next show is going to have a lot more collaborations...

AMF: One more collaboration question and then I promise not to say collaboration again during this interview. If you could do a collaboration with any living artist (who you haven't worked with yet) who would it be and why?
MS: I would love to do a piece with Ron English. He's awesome.

AMF: As many people know, you have your fingers in a lot of things. Along with the music and art industry you are also a business person on many other levels. What is it like juggling all these things and how you you find time for friends and family being so busy all the time?
MS: People ask me if I have time to sleep. I actually try to keep things balanced; when I'm at home, I try to see my family regularly and take weekends off. I have a great team of people that I work with, who help to carry the load. I just try to steer the ship in the right direction.

AMF: I have heard that you have a book coming out which will document the entire process of your upcoming exhibition, Glorious Excess (Dies). When will this book be out and what was driving factor behind it's creation?
MS: We just finished the book, and it looks incredible. It's the first time I've been able to explain what Glorious Excess is really about. There are so many complex, overlapping ideas and inspirations behind the show that every time I talk about it, I feel like I've left something out. I think the book sums it up: it covers everything, from the first ideas that started Glorious Excess (Born), to the end of Glorious Excess (Dies).

AMF: This may seem like a strange question, so I apologize ahead of time if it is...but being that you are a musician, painter, designer, writer and so much more...is there one of these things that you could not live without...or are they all equal to you?
MS: I just need to create stuff. Maybe that's a bad thing, since I suppose all these ideas could end up in a landfill someday! But hopefully, if I'm making good art and music, it will enhance people's lives.

AMF: Judging from your first solo, Glorious Excess (Dies) is bound to be a big success. Although this must be exciting for you I am sure you have many other things planned for the future. What else are you working on for the coming year and what, if anything, do you have planned for yourself and your work for the next 5-10 years?
MS: We have a new Linkin Park album in the works for next year, and I'm already working on my next art show. I 'd like to do my next show in New York; I'm looking for the right gallery space right now. After that, who knows? I just look for the next thing that seems exciting.
[Kerrang! Awards 2009 review] Posted on 17 Aug 2009 by Siby
JoeyDC posted on her website chestington.net scans of the latest Kerrang Mag Issue.
[Scans are here]

6.25pm: Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington arrives. Bennington will not be drinking a drop of alcohol this evening, but he does accept one K! staffer's aniseed sweets. Rock' n' roll! "I don't remember too much of that first time," he says of his only K! Award experience. "I got really drunk and then smoked a bunch of hash by myself..." Them were the days, eh?

before the appearance of LINKIN PARK, but even were it to still be chucking it down, such is he extent of the crowd participation this evening that it's hard to imagine anyone present would rather be anywhere else. From the one-two opening of Given Up and From The Inside, through the bouncing riffs of Points Of Authority and onto classics set-staples In The End and One Step Closer, it really is difficult to imagine better end to the day, even with the bizarre, momentum-halting appearance of Chester Bennington's Blur-meets-U2 project DEAD BY SUNRISE during the band's encore. Not even Bono himself would have pulled this one, chap.

"Chester Bennington thought he'd run into his old geography teacher. The cheeky burger!"

"Oh, wait, erm..." Chester was stumped by a rogue heckler asking him the speed of light.

8.04pm: Linkin Park's Chester Bennington steps up to accept the Classic Songwriter gong on behalf of the band. A video montage of some of their finest moments flashes on the video screens, all of which serve to remind the audience that while this is a band that don't get a lot of credit, they do have a lot of choruses. "I hope you all puke tonight," he laughs before exiting the stage. Thanks pal.

So, how does it feel to be classic?
CHESTER BENNINGTON (vocals):"Classic's an interesting word - I don't know whether it make me feel older or better! It's actually really cool to win this. We've always won awards for our videos, or for being best alternative band. So to be recognised for our songwriting is really special. I know I'm speaking for all the band when I say that having the words classc and songwriter next to our name is pretty awesome."

Given that you're the only member of the band here, will you keep quiet about winning this so you don't have to share the award?
CHESTER: "This is going to go in my bag and, if the band ask, I'm going to say 'I don't even know what I was doing there, guys'! I'll definitely keep this to myself and if they want a piece of it, they're going to have to pay me."

[Interview with Linkin Parks Brad Delson] Posted on 16 Aug 2009 by Siby
From timeout.com.hk:

Hey Brad so youre sitting backstage in Finland at the moment?
Finland, at the Sonisphere festival. It’s very metal. Except for us.

What does Linkin Park do backstage?
I just did an interview where I was asked whether I drink beer or whisky, and I was sad to reveal that I’m pounding spring water.

Spring water? Is that common for you?
Yeah, it is just spring water for me, before and after. And some stretching. [There is] this myth about the rock’n’roll lifestyle, but I dont think it would be very sustainable if one weren’t keeping their body in shape.

It doesnt sound like you’re very worthy of your nickname, Big Bad Brad.
That’s why it is a funny nickname. It’s ironic… Im neither big nor bad.

Okay, Little Good Bloke Brad, let’s talk about the album you are working on – I hear it is going to be genre busting. Is that like ghost busting?
Yeah – I think it has something to do with the flux capacitor. [Laughs]

So whats the deal?
We are working with Rick Rubin, and the stuff we’re doing doesnt sound like anything we have done before. It is experimental, melodic, really eclectic. The records we’ve made we’re really proud of… but I don’t think it would be inspiring to try and go replicate that.

Tell me a bit more about the sonic changes.
It’s hard, because I don’t want to lock it in with certain adjectives. To me, it sounds really futuristic, and it sounds really unusual but in a good way.

Well, of course you wouldn’t want to produce something crap, would you?
[Laughs]. Exactly – it could be unusual and really bad. But our goal is unusual and really good.

Have you been influenced by anything around at the moment?
Yeah, I always listen to both classic and newer folk-influenced music. Singer-songwriter, alternative music. I also listen to more experimental dance music. So it’s a weird mix, and you multiply that by six people.

So we should expect folk-electronica?
That’s what I’m going for.

What about New Divide does that give us a taste of your direction?
Absolutely not.

That’s lucky because it sounds like classic Linkin Park.
If anything, New Divide is almost a through-line to the classic, Hybrid Theory thing, which is ironic because it has nothing to do with any of the music we’ve been making. I think if anything it will throw people off where we’re going.

I also heard that it might be a concept album. Can you confirm or deny this?
I heard it might be too. I can confirm it might be.

So you’re not giving any hints away?
If I knew more, I would certainly tell you.

Could it possibly be about Transformers?
Not overtly.

And when are you hoping for it to be out?
Sometime, in the next ten years, but probably closer to the next year.

We’ve seen less and less rapping over the last albums. What’s the future for Linkin Park and rapping?
I think we’re at a point artistically where we don’t impose any rules on ourselves. I think everything’s open: it could be all rapping or no rapping. We’re just trying to make the best music we can, using the tools that we have in our tool belt.

You’ve had big success with New Divide, for the new Transformers movie. Did you watch Transformers as a kid?
I was a big Transformers fan.

Did you ever want to be a Transformer?
Yes. In fact, I want to be a Transformer as an adult. I would transform into a Gulf Stream 500.

Autobot or Decepticon?
Probably an Autobot, and I’d fly myself and my friends all over the world to exotic destinations.

[GLORIOUS EXCESS AND "THE SKULL"] Posted on 14 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

I looked at some great pieces online promoting the upcoming Glorious Excess show recently. Thanks to all the awesome folks who have given the show a shout out (like http://www.juxtapoz.com/Current/linkin-parks-mike-shinoda-at-japanese-american-national-museum-glorious-excess-dies and http://hypebeast.com/2009/07/mike-shinoda-glorious-excess-dies-exhibition-los-angeles/).

As you could guess, there were a couple people (read: cynical internet crybabies) who have commented, trying to call me out for "Damien Hirst" appropriation (Note: these are usually the same people who call Takashi Murakami "the guy who did the Kanye West cover"). Normally, I'd let this kind of dumbfuckery slide, but I figured I'd address it, since maybe they just didn't know better.

The skull imagery--besides being an obvious sex/drugs/rock n' roll reference--was a tip of the hat to the vanitas movement in 15th/16th century Europe. Hirst aside, it would be an insane task to list the amount of vanitas themes in modern art, outsider/street art, tattoo art, and rock / punk art. Whether they know it or not, a great deal of the stuff references the same idea the vanitas painters were getting at: the transience of life and inevitability of death...the fact that, no matter how much stuff you accumulate, you can't take it with you in the end. My pieces are my own, personal perspective on it--a perspective that is heavily influenced by the bizarre and unique life experience that I have had.

[END OF TOUR UPDATE] Posted on 14 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

Hey guys...thanks for the suggestions here http://www.mikeshinoda.com/blog/responses_to_fans/poa_intro about what to rap over the "Points Of Authority" intro. I threw some of "Step Up" over it the other night, and "Dedicated" last night. Dedicated sounded pretty good, in particular.

Three more shows to go on this tour (Shanghai, Macau, and back to L.A.), then we're home...and the Glorious Excess (Dies) art show kicks off on the 29th. I'm finalizing all the last minute details for the show: the art is being delivered to the museum, the book has gone to print, and I'm planning the rest of the exciting details of the show. I'll try to cover as much of it as I can, here on mikeshinoda.com, for all of you that live too far away to make it. But for those of you that can come, I hope eo see you there. There's nothing like seeing the art in person...
[ Linkin Park Donate to World Vision Taiwan] Posted on 13 Aug 2009 by Siby
Linkin Park, working with Music for Relief, is donating a portion of proceeds from tonight's show in Taipei, Taiwan to benefit victims of Typhoon Morakot.

Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan as a tropical storm earlier this week with winds of over 70 miles an hour. According to news reports, the damage has been devastating, with more than 10,000 dwellings toppled and hundreds trapped, possibly dead, as a result of mudslides.

The funds will be contributed to World Vision Taiwan and their relief and rehabilitation efforts. In addition to being part of the evacuation effort, World Vision has distributed food, cleaning supplies and relief kits to hundreds of people living in emergency shelters in Taimali Township and Jiadug Township in Taiwan. World Vision is an international relief, development and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. For more information, click here.

[Chester Bennington's dirty project] Posted on 10 Aug 2009 by Siby
From tourdates.co.uk:

Chester Bennington formed Dead By Sunrise because he wanted to make "dirty" songs.

The Linkin Park frontman recently debuted his new side project and says he formed the group so he could branch out from the 'In The End' hitmakers' usual sound.

He explained: "I had some songs which sounded so different and had this grungy, dirty feel to them - and Linkin Park kind of stay away from the grungy vibe, but I felt it served the songs well. So I got a little push from my friend Ryan Shuck, who plays guitar in the band, and he kind of helped me make the choice to start the band, and I'm really glad he did because I think we've made a really great record. "

The rocker insists that he has no problem with juggling the two bands as he has learned how to take things one at a time.

He added to BANG Showbiz: "My schedule is complicated but I have kind of taken on this new philosophy which is don't think about anything too much and tackle things one piece at a time and what looks like a mountain actually turns out to be a bunch of little pebbles stacked up on top of each other."

[GLORIOUS EXCESS DIES COMES TO L.A.] Posted on 06 Aug 2009 by Siby
From mikeshinoda.com:

Posted by lpcrazygirl (similar posts by others) - I would like to read something about your glorious excess dies art show or rather if you will make a glorious excess born/dies art show in another country like maybe germany. That would be amazing and I think that many fans will go and see your art show, because it's incredible!

M: Sorry for the late response on this / these...I'm glad you guys asked about the art show. My GLORIOUS EXCESS DIES art show is returning to Los Angeles on August 29th! It opens at the Japanese American National Museum, and stays open from August 30th to October 4th. There will be 17 new pieces, plus a new video documentary. I will be attending the opening, available for autographs if you're interested :) The money from the show, as usual, goes to charity (MFR, ACCD, JANM).

Glorious Excess is about obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess. The show follows a nameless celebrity character as he indulges in the sex, drugs, and rock n roll lifestyle. In this show, he grows to the limits of his fame, reveling without moderation in the excesses of modern celebrity until he implodes.

I'm also pleased to announce there will be a new book released with the show. It's over 120 pages long, and covers the entire Glorious Excess experience, in text and pictures. Not just a "making of" piece; the book elaborates on the thoughts behind the show, with stories about how my ideas and thoughts on the subject came to be. It's the first time I've been able to properly sum us the GLXS experience. More info to come...

[Freed U.S. journalists on way home from North Korea] Posted on 05 Aug 2009 by Siby
[nothing to do with Linkin Park but its something we all were waiting for]

From cnn.com:

The families of two U.S. journalists imprisoned in North Korea asked former President Bill Clinton to travel to the Communist country and seek the release of the two women, a senior administration official said.

Former Vice President Al Gore, whose California-based media outfit Current TV employs Laura Ling and Euna Lee, also made the same appeal to Clinton.

Clinton was dispatched to Pyongyang after the United States determined that his mission would be successful, the official told reporters Tuesday night on condition of anonymity.

He stressed that Clinton's trip was strictly a private humanitarian mission and did not include pressing international issues, including North Korea's nuclear program, on the agenda.

Earlier in the day, North Korea pardoned Ling, 32, and Lee, 36. They climbed a flight of stairs to the door of a jet, where they shook Clinton's hand before beginning their trip back to the United States.

"They are en route to Los Angeles where Laura and Euna will be reunited with their families," said Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna in a written statement.

Ling and Lee were arrested in March while reporting from the border between North Korea and China and sentenced in June to 12 years of hard labor on charges of entering the country illegally to conduct a smear campaign.

She met Mark (from LPLive) ,Mark who film Linkin Park on Tour, Mike and Phoenix.
Sounds like she had a lot of fun!

The girl next to me: Will you ever have an art show in Europe mike?
Mike: I would like! I really want to and it will be amazing, but currently I never brought the gallery out of LA, not even to New York. I can't tell you when or if it happends but I would really like it.
Me: Phoenix, how come you don't show up on the Band's full shots on NEW DIVIDE?
Dave: well that day I had an argument with Joe, and he decided not to show me
Me: But you were in the studio that day?
Dave: yes!
Me: where? behind the transformers or the camera?
*Mike laughed* Dave: I dont know...
Me: the video would have been so much better with you..
Dave: yes I know...

I think there were some questions but I dont remember...I just remember my last question:
Me: Whose Label is Pancakey cakes music and Nondisclosure agreement music?
Mike: well these aren't labels..more signatures. As an artist you have to sign whenever you publish something..and they actually mean nothing..
Me: ah okay! I know that Big Bad Mr. Hahn is joe's and yours kenji kobayashi..
Mike: yeah and I think Chester has a lot
Dave: yeah chester has a lot. which one do you think is mine?
Me: well I thought Pancakey cakes music, because its a funny name..you are funny and brad is more the "strange guy"..
Mike: yeah the stupid guy..he is stupid..well I guess you are right...cakes are like dave...sweet and delicious..
me: yeah phidelicious..
Dave: yep so I guess it would be my signature!

[First DBS Show!] Posted on 03 Aug 2009 by Siby
From DBS Myspace:

Wow. Incredible first Dead By Sunrise show in Stuttgart, Germany. German LP fans are fucking awesome!

Sitting at the airport with the LP crew everyone half asleep from working their asses off last night. It was incredible to see the crowd clapping their hands as hard as they could and yelling “Linkin Park” ALL NIGHT LONG! I think the DBS set went really well by “my Suffering” there were hands from front to back for us as well.

This was our first real show, and I am amazed at how well the band performed together. I guess the experience of being in Julien-K together, fresh off our last US tour carried over well into DBS. It was really cool to able to play guitar again and look over to see my favorite singer (and best friend) rocking the fuck out with us.

The band looked great seems that we can not shake the fact that we love our fashion. Looks like black and stark white are the color combos that work
More later Knebworth, UK next!

[Joe playing Backgammon] Posted on 03 Aug 2009 by Siby
Here's an exclusive video of Joe playing Backgammon in Istanbul.

DJ Joe Hahn has many skillz, but did you know he can throw some dice, and play a little backgammon too? SPIN Earth caught up with Joe in Istanbul, where we played a few games just before he went on stage (literally 20 minutes earlier we're at the backgammon board, then he walks out THERE and makes magic to open a 90+ minute set for Linkin Park at the Rock'N Coke music festival in Turkey). Thanks Joe for making time to hang, and for having the talent and wherewithal to play a game, and play THE game. See what DJ Joe does off-stage, and on-stage (you'll see at about 1 min into this video!). Enjoy. Joe, when can I get a re-match??

Thanks to chester-land.net for the tip! =)
[LINKIN PARK Vocalist Opening New Art Exhibit] Posted on 03 Aug 2009 by Siby
From Blabbermouth.net:

The Pulse of Radio reports that LINKIN PARK vocalist Mike Shinoda will open a new solo art exhibition called "Glorious Excess (Dies)" at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles next month. The new 17-painting show will open on August 29 with a public reception at 8:00 p.m., with Shinoda in attendance, and will remain at the museum through October 4. The new show is a sequel of sorts to his 2008 exhibition, "Glorious Excess (Born)", and Shinoda told The Pulse of Radio how it's different. "It's gonna be a bigger show with twice as many pieces, and it's gonna be a lot of fun," he said. "We had an amazing reception on the first show and I can't wait for people to see the new one."

Both "Glorious Excess" shows offer up a mix of paintings and digital works that explore society's obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess.

A collectible, limited-edition book chronicling the "Glorious Excess" series will be launched on opening night, while a documentary short film will run during the course of the exhibition. Series-based merchandise, including skateboard decks, will be on sale at the museum as well. All proceeds from the sale of both artwork and merchandise will go toward the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

[KOZIK | Release Pushed Back] Posted on 26 Sep 2009 by Siby
From suru-la.com:

It is with great regret to announce that we are pushing back the release and signing of Kozik’s “The Bird Is The Word” Giant MAO Chrome Edition, to some time in mid November. The chroming process of these amazing pieces requires some extra attention in order to perfect each and every one of the 25 Limited Edition figures. Rather than rush the process, we have decided to give our chroming facility some additional time and expect to start pre-sales in early October. We apologize for those of you who have already contacted us regarding the pieces, and to all our followers who were anticipating the first look and release next week. We hope this teaser will get you excited as to what the final pieces will look like!

So far, it has been a lot of fun...although we don't have a release date to announce yet, I thought I'd share a few of my concept drawings with you guys. I know it's a terrible picture, ha!

This is the first time since the announcement that we've really talked about or mentioned anything about the game. We 're still working on it, but here's what we want it to be: 1) Unique, 2) Fun.

We've been brainstorming ways to make story, combat, puzzles, music-based challenges, and RPG elements all fit within a community in the game. There are also some really funny things going on in the game that I know a lot of LP fans will recognize. Stay tuned for more info...

[Video: Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda Talks No. 1, New Album] Posted on 23 Sep 2009 by Siby
From billboard.com:

I don't think it's indicative of where the next record is going," Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda says of "New Divide," the "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" soundtrack song that hit No. 1 on both the Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts this summer. In a video interview with Billboard.com in conjunction with Fuse, the co-vocalist/ rapper explained that the band's follow up to 2007 No. 1 album "Minutes To Midnight" is underway now that the album by Dead By Sunrise, singer Chester Bennington's side project, is finished and nearing its Oct. 13 release.

"We mentally want to get back to [2000's "Hybrid Theory"] not because we want to sound like [that], because I don't think we do," Shinoda says of the forthcoming Linkin Park album, which they aim to release in the first half of 2010. "But we want to make this record a record with identity, hopefully not one you've heard before. One you can listen to and say, 'That's brand new... It's definitely Linkin Park, but it's definitely different.'"

[KOZIK "The Bird is the Word" Giant Mao / Next SURU event] Posted on 21 Sep 2009 by Siby
From suru-la.com:

For decades now, San Francisco based artist Frank Kozik has captured an audience by his graphically compelling and culturally gripping work. Kozik, one of the most prolific and popular designers and producers of vinyl toys, has in recent years released several high-end limited edition vinyl sculptures.

In 2006 he first released “The Bird is the Word” vinyl bust featuring a hybrid between China’s Chairman Mao Tse Tung and the iconic figure Mickey Mouse. The original piece debuted at 15” in height, and later a limited edition Bronze “Giant Mao” almost double in size was released in an edition of 50 pieces.

SURU is proud to announce that after months in the works, we will be releasing an even more limited edition of the “Giant Mao” aka “The Bird is the Word” in a chrome finish that you will have to see to appreciate! The chrome edition is limited to only 25 pieces, and will be released Wednesday September 30th at SURU! In addition to the release, we are honored to have Kozik be in attendance for the event. The piece will be unveiled later this week as well as event details.

[Chester Bennington Talks New Band, Debut] Posted on 18 Sep 2009 by Siby
From billboard.com:

Dead By Sunrise's debut album, "Out of Ashes," doesn't come out until Oct. 13, but frontman Chester Bennington is guaranteeing it will be a going concern, though always subject to the demands of his other band, Linkin Park.

"We'll make records when we can," Bennington -- who started forming Dead By Sunrise, originally as Snow White Tan, in 2005 -- tells Billboard.com. "I don't think people should expect to see an album every couple of years. I'm definitely not going to tell Linkin Park, 'Hey, can you guys take some time off so I can go work on Dead By Sunrise?' That's not gonna happen. But we definitely see this as something we'll continue to do. This isn't a one-time thing for us. Every five years or so I could imagine there'd be a Dead By Sunrise record."

And, Bennington adds, his bandmates in Linkin Park have become his "No. 1 support group" for Dead By Sunrise.

"I think they see how much time I put into it," he says, "and they definitely can tell these songs are different from what Linkin Park is doing. I still contribute 110 percent to Linkin Park. I think they know (Dead By Sunrise) is not something I would do if it meant jeopardizing what we have in Linkin Park."

With the album's first single, "Crawl Back In," already out, Bennington -- who co-produced the album with Howard Benson -- and the Dead By Sunrise crew are itching to play some live shows in support of "Out of Ashes." "We really are looking forward to going and playing small venues for a few hundred people," he says, "and really having the people who want to hear us play getting sweaty with us and having speakers right in their faces and blasting them pretty loud."

The fledgling group will also offer fans some bonus material, including a cover of the Misfits' "20 Eyes" and acoustic renditions of the "Out of Ashes" songs, some of which will be available for download with the purchase of the album.

While he's preparing for "Out of Ashes' " release, however, Bennington is also in the studio with Linkin Park working on the band's fourth album. Rick Rubin is again on board as co-producer, and Bennington says the group would like to have the set out by mid-2010 but "won't put anything out until we can pull a batch of super-stellar songs together."

"We're really experimenting a lot with sounds and time signatures and (song) structures," Bennington reports, "really not being constrained by any kind of preconceived ideas that we might have ourselves. So it's really promising."

[Mike vs Phoenix: War is over] Posted on 13 Sep 2009 by Siby
Mike explains it all on his blog.

I guess this war is over: I outsmarted Phoenix, now he's delusional.

Poor team Twitter…they're in blog > twitter denial. Apparently, they misunderstood the whole battle. Let's go back to the beginning:

twitter.com/phoenixlp: "blogging < facebook < twitter < giant terd. For the non-math contingent, those are "less than" symbols." and "blogging… lame. "Blog" is worse than "twitter."

Therefore, unfortunately for team Twitter, this has never been a "which side are you on" debate.

Greater-than and less-than: it's a hierarchical debate. As in:

Food: Enjoyable and necessary
Blog: Enjoyable and useful
My Toilet: I don't care one way or another about it, but at least it's useful.
Twitter: Less than toilet.

I know Dave is a Star Wars fan, so I'll help him out by using a Star Wars analogy. The question is not "are you on the light side or the dark side?" The question is: which is higher on the food chain, blog or twit?

Blogging is Yoda. Twitter is Jar Jar Binks.
[Mike on twitter] Posted on 11 Sep 2009 by Siby

Apparently both @lpunderground and @TherealRyu follows him. I think that is sufficient to prove that this time is the real one. Also, Adam from LPUHQ confirmed that. Thanks!

Mike Shinoda @m_shinoda

***Edit:
From mikeshinoda.com:

Dave just texted me: "you're not on Twitter, right? I think there's a new spazz imposter."

LOL. I'm using Twitter the way it's supposed to be used, Dave. As my blog's bitch.
EDIT: For those of you who don't know what a twitterfeed is...it automatically posts links to my blog posts. In other words, I don't actually tweet anything. It makes Twitter my blog's subordinate, underling, inferior...biiiaaatch.

Posted by nike91 - mike, actually a lot would like to know obout yourself, i mean that when you pulled out the MTM record in a lot of onterviews you sad that you had changed in the last 2-2,5 years. Mostlly i would like to know obout Mike Shinoda in the period of HT & Meteora and Mike Shinoda know MTM to reacentlly now New Divide.

M: I think it would go something like this:

'09 Mike: Hi younger Mike.
'01 Mike: Hi older Mike, good to meet you.
9M: What the hell is going on with your hair?
1M: I bleached it white and dyed it red.
9M: I'm sure you won't regret that. Hey, have you heard Minutes To Midnight?
1M: Yeah, awesome record! I wish I could write an album so diverse, complex, and thoughtful. I can't say enough good things...
9M: Thanks young Mike. Hybrid Theory was one hell of an album. Good job.
1M: You heard it? We just finished recording. It was tough to make, but I'm happy with how it came out. Hey, are you allowed to tell me how the future will turn out? I'm getting a little tired of living in my sh*tty apartment, eating cup-o-noodles and macaroni and cheese all the time. I think the cockroaches are getting ready for a major rebellion.
9M: I'm sure it will all work out. You'll probably feel a lot better once the album drops.
1M: So what's different in the future?
9M: So far, a lot. I don't really have enough time to tell you about it all, plus I might open up some hole in the space-time continuum or something. Ask Doc Brown.
1M: Awesome. I'm really excited to get out on the road and play these songs every night.
9M: Hmm. Have you ever eaten Fruity Pebbles Cereal every day for a month?
1M: No, why?
9M: Nevermind. What do you think you guys will do next?
1M: I heard we'll be shooting a video for One Step Closer. We're picking a director now.
9M: Hmm...Do yourself a favor: fire the director, and just shoot a live video.
1M: What? I don't understand. Why?

["Shoot First" from Wanna Snuggle?] Posted on 10 Sep 2009 by Siby
From myspace.com/apathy:

I got a brand new single up on my player, on my page.

"Shoot First" featuring B-Real (of Cypress Hill) and Celph Titled, produced by Mike Shinoda (of Linkin Park).

The song is like some throw back "How I Could Just Kill A Man" type shit... but updated.
As soon as Shinoda sent me the beat... I knew I had to get B-Real on that.

And then, given the subject matter... the logical choice for an additional guest appearance, was my partner in rhyme, Celph Titled.
Chum laced the cuts at the end... and poof... classic shit.

First day back in the (recording) studio after the art show madness is over...I was working on music from home for the past few weeks. Good stuff coming along. It was pretty ridiculous, but I think it might turn into something cool later. Then again, it could just stay the same as it is...kinda silly.

[Glorious Excess (Dies) review] Posted on 02 Sep 2009 by Siby
From hibui.blogspot.com:

I stopped by the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) located in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles this afternoon to go check out Mike Shinoda's(Linkin Park) Glorious Excess (Dies) this is the 2nd part to his series of exhibits. Last years was Glorious Excess (Born). As soon as I walked in I was blown away by all the detail and flawless designs/color(s) I love thing's like this because it's not your typical lets get a paintbrush and make lines and color them in.. Mike uses all types of material including lots of tabloids that showcase our celebrities and their lives.

I am really glad that Mike is showing more and more of his artistic side. He designed most of the covers for LP's albums, had another gallery Diamond Spades Hearts Clubs, went to school at the pasadena art center, ton's and ton's of stuff. I have been following Linkin Park since late 2003 till this day. The band has grown and I know the reason why. FANS. They know how to reach out to them and listen to what they want. We'll save this for another day.

If you are in the LA Area, definitely stop by and check this out!
There is also an awesome video that was put together and showed every 10 minutes.

Be sure to pick up the book!

Review from 8asians.com:

I was totally hyped and anxious not only go to see Mike Shinoda, but to also see what was in store regarding his art. The day started off with a conversation between him and Roger Gastman of Swindle Magazine; during this event, Mike touched on various topics from his influences and background in art to the character and story of Glorious Excess (Born and Dies). After his discussion, Mike took questions from the audience, where he gave some really personal and in-depth answers; he mentioned how people labeling his music drives him crazy like “rock/rap,” which was funny because I later mentioned to him that was the type of music I liked.

After Mike took questions from the audience, we got to see a short video segment that is being played at the JANM exhibit and part of that segment is also in the video above. Then Mike took pictures, autographed catalogs and other items for those in attendance, while being extremely cool the whole time! On top of that, Mike graciously walked us through the entire exhibit at the JANM and further discussed certain topics in regards to his art. One particular subject that he brought up was the idea of a sellout; he defined a sellout as being someone who loses their creative integrity, which correlates with the character in Glorious Excess. Overall, for me this was a once in a lifetime experience and this is something I will remember and share for the rest of my life. I thought Mike’s art exhibit was very interesting and I understood a lot more after reading more about it in his catalog. As for Mike Shinoda the person, I thought he was very cool and down-to-earth, as well as being very humble and considerate.
